Bluegrass Balloon Festival

The Festival's website described the event as this:

"The Louisville skyline will host a birthday party of gigantic proportions for the 10th anniversary of the Bluegrass Balloon Festival, September 26 - 28, 2008. The celebration includes a 90 foot Meijer birthday cake. Pilots from across the United States and Canada will descend on Louisville for the largest event of its kind in Kentucky. The festival offers something for everyone from the mass ascension in the early morning light to the magical radiance of balloons aglow at night."

With Trey's birthday falling on the 26th and a day off from school for the boys, this celebration seemed the just thing to end his special birthday bash. After some early morning presents and fun with Rich before he headed off for work, the kids and I packed up the van and drove to our old stomping grounds. We hung out at the Underwood's (Trey's birthday wish!) and then headed down to Bowman Field. It was quite remarkable to be there on that day since exactly one year earlier my children and I had been in that same area eating dinner at Moe's with my little brother Jeff when he flew out to Louisville to interview for medical school. Trey's has had some interesting birthdays indeed! It really lived up to the hype. It was a paradise for kids and adults alike. The boys played a few free games and won a couple of small prizes.
The girls enjoyed watching the boys play. There were booths giving away free things and food for sale. This was awesome. My boys liked watching the summer TV show I survived a Japanese Game Show. This was right up their alley. Trey was not pleased he had to sit this one out since he had a large orange cast bound to his right arm. Next year bud!Josh Next up was Matt. The girls turn for some fun.Kristi and Anna sign Trey's cast.I was very excited to check out what it is like inside a hot air balloon. Josh and Brynn won toothbrushes from the bobbing ducks. The boys had to go down this slide. It was well worth the long wait. Brynn, Josh, Trey and MattThe girls loved it too. I got to tag along to help them get up the steep climb to the top of the slide. Shhh! Don't tell Rich Trey took a turn too.
Time for the REAL FUN! How appropriate that we step up camp in front of the huge birthday cake.Brynn wasn't too sure about the balloons at first. I kept her in my arms, which was perfect. One less child to chase or keep and eye on.The Underwood and Gold gangs. There weren't any real rules regarding the balloons. They allowed you to get up close and personal. You could get right up to the baskets and wander under and around them as they glowed. There was a constant blink of light and dark as various balloons fire shone bright. It was magical. Pure and simple.
A perfect birthday for Trey. A perfect day for all.
