Pinnacle Pirates vs Waterford Waverunners

Wednesday night we had our first away meet against the Waterford Waverunners. It is the next neighborhood over, so their pool was just down the street. The Waverunners have a smaller swim team, so the meet went very quickly. It was a nice change from the long 3 hour ones we often have against larger teams (6:00 PM- past 9:00 PM). Though we still have it a bit easier than some. Trey's last event (breaststroke) if often done by 8:30 PM and we leave right after and don't have to stay until the bitter end.
Matt: FreestyleJoshTreyJosh played the DS while waiting for his next event. Matt brought the older Nintendo. He can't wait for his birthday next week so he can get a DS and not have to share with Josh anymore because Josh thinks it belongs to him.Next up- backstroke. All three boys swam. Josh gets his goggles set.Josh was in the second heat. While Josh is in the water, Matt waits in the chair behind so he can swim in the heat after. It was Matt's first time ever swimming backstroke in a meet and he did a great job!! He stayed straight and took second place in his heat (43 seconds).TreyRich came straight from the hospital. It was SO HOT and he was cooking in his long sleeve shirt and black pants. The theme for the meet was "Black Out" and everyone was encourage to wear black, so he fit right in with his dark slacks. The girls don't own anything that is black with short sleeves, so we just went with red. The love to cheer their big brothers on and eat lots of snacks during the meet. We bought hot dogs and nachos from the concession stand, which they loved.Trey did a great job on butterfly. I am still amazed he can so this stroke. I have never mastered it.He also swam breaststroke and took 5 seconds off his time from last week (33.44 seconds). This picture is so Trey. The moment he touches, he looks at the other lanes to see how well he did against the other swimmers.Three meets down, two to go. It's going so quickly! We love watching the boys swim. I am so proud of their progress. Great job guys!

Case in point

This is why I insist the girls take off their clothes BEFORE eating spaghetti. And we NEVER eat it anywhere but in the kitchen. Just. In. Case.

Fellowship

It is official today, Rich matched for a Neuroradiology Fellowship Program at the University of Cincinnati from July 2010- July 2011.

Neuroradiology is a subspecialty of radiology focusing on the diagnosis and characterization of abnormalities of the central and peripheral nervous system, spine, and head and neck. Primary imaging modalities include computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Angiography is traditionally used for diagnosis of vascular abnormalities or diagnosis and characterization of masses or other lesions.

Deciding which field of radiology Rich wanted to specialize in was a challenge. Should he do and Musculoskelatal/ MRI based fellowship? Should we wait and see if the University of Kentucky's new MSK fellowship received approval and funding? Should we seek elsewhere: Little Rock, Arkansas or Nebraska? Where is the future of medicine headed? What would be the best field for Rich? There were a lot of unknowns that played into it all.

Rich interviewed with Cincinnati back in March. They offered him a spot that day and yet we needed time to decide what was best for our family. The faculty at UC is amazing and it is probably one of the top Neuroradiology programs in the mid-west. They were so kind to Rich and I know he'll receive excellent training there, but it was still hard to know what option was the best for us.

In the end this opportunity in Cincinnati just seemed to fit. Advice from parents and talks between the two of us lead us to know that saying no to Cincinnati could be something we both could later regret. Rich will have a busy 12 months, but I know will gain knowledge and skills that he could not learn elsewhere.

We are still unsure if we will move. Luckily we have a year to figure it all out. I am hoping we can have some heavenly help to know what would be best for the kids. The drive can fluctuate between and hour and half to two hours plus depending on traffic. We could stay in our home here in Lexington and have Rich commute and spend a few nights a week in an apartment. We also could sell our home and move into a rental home north of the city. Neither option is perfect. I hate to think the boys would be the 'new kids' two years in a row and if Rich is going to be crazy busy it would be nice to have neighbors and ward we know instead of being alone surrounded by strangers. But the idea of him not being with us everyday and making that long drive often, is not good either. We'll just have to see.

There also is a good chance Rich would pursue a second year fellowship in pediatric radiology at the University of Cincinnati once his neuroradiology training is complete. They have one of the top pediatric hospitals and departments in the country, and would allow Rich to be very highly trained and marketable during all this healthcare uncertainty. If he chooses this option, moving to Cincinnati would make perfect sense.

Only time will tell, but the nice thing about time is it just keeps moving along- day by day. Who knows, someday we might actually get done (After 10, or possibly 11, years of medical training post college!)!

Congrats Rich on your match. We are proud of you and love you so much!

Father's Day

I do realize, every single day, what a lucky girl I am to have married Rich. The past thirteen years we have been together have been full of love, friendship, joy and growth. He is my best friend. The person I would go with to the end of the Earth and back, just to share the journey. The man I long to see each and every day he is away. The person that makes anywhere we are home. The one I am blessed to spend forever with.

Rich is a wonderful, hands on and attentive father. He is such a hard worker and never complains about the LONG hours at the hospital and years and years of school he has endured, and still has to endure. From passing board exams to getting up with babies, he does it all with a smile and a positive attitude.

I really wish I was more like him. I love his goodness, his honesty and his longing to be a better person. He is a wonderful example to our children and to me. He is one of those rare people anyone would be proud to emulate. He's the kind of person that makes you better by just being around him. I am so blessed to have him in my life every single day.

So here's to you babe. Happy Father's Day. I love you. More than I can say.
And to my own sweet father, Happy Father's Day to you. You are my hero. You are kind, compassionate, humble and the smartest person I have ever met. Really. Thanks for the love, support, and help throughout my life. I never could find a better father. Ever. I love you!!

Fishing and Fossils

Early Saturday morning Rich and the boys loaded up the van and headed down near Bardstown for a Cub Scout activity in Spencer County. Out in the middle central Kentucky they fished using Bamboo rods they made, took a hike and collected fossils. It was an intensely hot and muggy day, but they had a ball.

Trey has been begging us to take him fishing for over a year and was ecstatic to catch 4 fish. Much to my relief, they released all the fish. Josh and Matt fished as well, but were unlucky getting bites. Matt did find an extensive fossil collection he happily hauled home.

We also got a few unwanted visitors from the trip. Even with bug spray and long pants, Trey pulled a tick from his side later that night and he and Josh have quite a infestation of chiggers on various parts of their bodies. After nearly a decade of living in the Bluegrass, this is our first bout with these pesky tiny bugs. I have been applying clear fingernail polish to the bites and reminding them not to scratch, but it simply will take some time for these annoying things to go away. One of four he caught.Matt brought home many amazing fossils from their hike.
