Cumberland Falls

For the past ten years I have wanted to visit Cumberland Falls.   Traci Underwood told me about it when we first moved to Louisville, but we never made it down while Rich was in medical school.  Located in Corbin, Kentucky it was just a mere 1 hour 45 minute drive to the waterfall from Lexington.

When Rich and I began discussing summer vacations plans for his week off, we knew we would only be able to fit in a quick trip after our move to Cincinnati.  Cumberland Falls needed to be one of our destinations.  It was now or never really.

Sometimes called the Little Niagara, the Niagara of the South, or the Great Falls, is a large waterfall on the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky. Spanning the river at the border of McCreary and Whitley counties, the waterfall is the central feature of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park.

On average the falls, which flow over a resistant sandstone bed, are 68 feet high and 125 feet wide.

Under a full moon on clear nights, an elusive lunar rainbow or moonbow is sometimes formed by the mist emanating from the falls.

The falls were gorgeous even though it was ridiculously hot.  We briefly hiked around the falls and had a bite to eat at the little eatery.

Then we were off to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

We did Cumberland Falls once before Hayden was born. We camped nearby in the weirdest campground ever. It was then we realized camping in KY has a completely different meaning. We got the "remote" campsite because it wasn't actually on the golf course and was about 100 yards away from the swimmimg pool......too funny.

Honestly I can't believe there was actually something you hadn't done yet while living in KY. You sure did make the most of your time there.
