Trey Update

It seems hard to believe that our dramatic Saturday afternoon and subsequent day in the ER was only just 72 hours ago. Less than three days ago Trey was a crumpled mass on the grass, screaming, "The pain! My hand feels weird! I don't want to lose my arm! Don't let them cut off my arm!" As we worked to get him off the field and to the hospital I was scared this might be such a severe injury Trey might be out of commission for awhile.
Nope. That hasn't been the case at all. Trey hasn't slowed down much, which is a blessing and a curse. It is wonderful to see him happy, healthy, active and nearly pain free even with a massive temporary cast on his arm and two bones on the mend. The down side is that we just worry he'll do too much and reinjure himself. So far, so good. Some kids are just impossible to keep down.

Trey was up bright and early with the rest of us and went to all three hours of church on Sunday starting at 9 AM. After a bit of Tylenol after sacrament meeting, he was excited to go to Primary. Sunday afternoon brought even more visitors. Trey's other soccer coach and his family stopped by to drop off cookies, a balloon and many cards they had handmade Trey. The whole family assisted us when Trey was on the field. He's been comfortable enough at night to sleep in many various odd positions. It was off to school on Monday. I went to lunch with him and he did a great job eating with and using only his left hand. Later that day Sammy's mom, the hospital and the YMCA all called to check on Trey. The YMCA even refunded our soccer fees since he's out for the season. I really have appreciated the love and concern so many people have shown for Trey. It's been incredible.Monday night brought a bit of a challenge: homework. Spelling was the only real hard subject since there was so much writing. So we compromised. He spelled the word out loud and tried to write the word with his left hand while I helped form the letters. He was able to draw a skateboarding scene for 'verb man' and I colored the picture. I love teamwork!Trey certainly isn't one that likes to be left out or bored, so wouldn't you know he would find a way to play table hockey against Josh with one hand. And a life with out his PS2 would be far too boring, so after a quick test, he realized he only needed his thumb and pointer finger on his right hand to play. Yup, he's doing not too bad. Not bad at all.

Poor Trey! And poor mom! I'm sure it's an adjustment to be taking on all the additional responsibilities an injury like that may accrue for you. ;-) I do have a friend here, though, who's first-grader fell off the monkey bars at school last week and broke BOTH arms, so she's bathing him, going to school to feed him and everything! Add that to my "please don't let that be me" list. Good to see he's gaming okay, that will help the time pass more quickly, right? How long does he have before he gets a little more mobility?
